Deer Disposal

In an attempt to rid the County's roadsides
 Highway Deer
of road-killed deer, The Litter Board instituted the Highway Sanitation/Deer Disposal Program in the summer of 2000. Our Highway Sanitation Technician, Paul Brooks  responds to reports of dead deer six days per week. If a call is received before mid-morning, the deer is usually picked up the same day.

We have been averaging over 1,600 deer per year and disposed of over 140 tons at the landfill to date. In 2001, The Litter Board purchased a new pickup truck for this program, equipped with a lift-gate for easier and safer loading of the carcasses, some of which weigh in at well over 100 pounds.

If you see a dead deer on any 2-lane roadway in Monroe County, call us at 570-420-3754, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Please be sure to leave your telephone number, in the event that Paul has trouble locating the deer.

Report deer carcasses on 4-lane highways to PennDOT at 570-424-3024.
